| Site Cleared for Shul in Newton, Mass. | | | The Historical Commission has rejected the efforts of neighbors and aldermen to have a 1820s farmhouse in Oak Hill landmarked, clearing way for an Orthodox Jewish group to knock it down and build a synagogue.
The property, at 349 Dedham St., is currently owned by the Beth Menachem Chabad, which currently owns the synagogue at 229 Dedham St.
Last year, the previous owner had applied for a demolition permit for 349 Dedham St. They were denied a permit and instead received the customary one-year delay. Their wait has now expired, and the commission's 6-1 denial to landmark the property removes the last hurdle to the chabad's plans.
The Chabad's spokesman, Fred Chanowski, said it was too early to say what if any parts of the current structure would remain. "We're in the very early architectural design phases. We're making every effort to use what is architecturally sound," said Chanowski.
