1. Likud Loyalists Torpedo PM Sharon´s Disengagement Appointments
By Ezra HaLevi

The Knesset rejected Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's controversial appointment of ministers who supported the Disengagement contrary to the Likud Party's platform Monday evening.

Prime Minister Sharon refused to hold two separate votes on the appointment of Ehud Olmert and the appointments of Ronnie Bar-On and Ze'ev Boim to his government - even after the Likud "rebels," or "loyalists" as they call themselves – made it clear they would oppose the appointments if lumped together.

The appointments of Bar-On as industry, trade and employment minister and Boim as immigrant absorption minister outraged Likud loyalists due to the fact that the appointments are seen as the payment of a bribe to the two MK's for their betrayal of the Likud Party platform in favor of Sharon's agenda.

Immediately following the vote, PM Sharon took the plenum and read a prepared speech decrying the factionalism of the Knesset. MK Tzvi Hendel (National Union) yelled out, "Factionalism is not the issue - your corruption is!"

Out of the 120 Knesset members, 54 voted for the appointments and 60 MKs opposed. The Likud members who opposed the appointments were MKs Uzi Landau, Michael Ratzon, David Levy, Naomi Blumenthal, Ayoub Kara, Ehud Yatom, Yuli Edelstein, and former finance minister Benjamin Netanyahu. MKs Gilad Erdan, Moshe Kahlon and Yuval Steinitz were not present for the vote and former Likud 'loyalists' Michael Gorolovsky, Leah Ness and Yehiel Hazan voted in favor of the appointments. Labor MK Amram Mitzna broke with party discipline and left the Knesset for the vote.

UTJ MK Meir Porush agreed to vote for the appointments after promised by PM Sharon that a committee to examine the problems facing Hareidi-religious schools would be formed.

About an hour after his failure to pass the appointments, Sharon put forth Olmert's appointment separately, along with that of Labor Party MK Matan Vilnai (Labor) as science and technology minister. The Knesset voted 71-41 to approve Olmert and Vilnai's appointments due to the fact that if Olmert was not installed as Finance Minister Monday, his temporary terms would expire Tuesday, necessitating early elections.

Army Radio's Amit Segal suggested that Sharon brought the vote to the Knesset, even though he knew it would fail to demonstrate to Boim and Bar-On (and their constituents) that he did his best to reward them for supporting the Disengagement, "and if they cannot be rewarded in this Knesset, then they will be in the next one."

MK Yuli Edelstein, one of the loyalists, said that concern for "public hygiene" obligated the Knesset to oppose the appointment of politicians who publicly rejected the decisions of their party, explaining that the extent of corruption, he says, is publicly dirtying the face of Israeli politics.

Foreign Minister Silvan Shalom told the Likud loyalists that they must either allow the government to function or new elections would be called – an eventuality not feared by most of the loyalists anyhow.

Earlier Monday, the parliament also rejected four no-confidence motions. The first was put forth by Shinui Party Chairman Yosef Lapid due to allegation of government corruption, the second by National Union Chairman Benny Elon due to the increase in the cost of bread and the poverty situation, the third by MK Yossi Sarid (Meretz/Yahad), also due to the rise in cost of bread and the fourth by Shas Chairman Eli Yishai due to the Supreme Court decision that, "some of Israel's schoolchildren who learn Torah should be discriminated against due to their worldview" – in Yishai's words.

2. Egypt and EU Give Ammo and Training to PA as Attacks Continue
By Ezra HaLevi

Arab attacks continue and the IDF carries out arrest operations of wanted terrorists almost nightly as Egypt and the European Union announce they will be providing ammunition and training to the PA.

An IDF jeep driving near Palestinian Authority (PA) controlled Shechem (Nablus) drove over an explosive device, resulting in an officer sustaining light injuries Monday night. The jeep was completely burned.

Throughout Judea and Samaria, IDF troops arrested 20 wanted terrorists during the night, as well.

In the Balata slums of Shechem, terrorists opened fire at soldiers. There were no injuries and soldiers returned fire.

Gunfire was reported by an Israeli motorist near the Jewish town of Kiryat Arba. The driver reported shots fired in his direction at the Okfim Junction to the IDF, which arrived at the scene and launched a search for the shooter.

Following the government-ordered opening of the Erez crossing to enable Israeli Arabs to visit relatives in Gaza, the bag of an Israeli Arab citizen exploded as he was crossing from Gaza into mainland Israel. No injury or damage was reported in the incident, which was the result of American pressure to open the Gaza crossings despite promises to Israeli citizens that the Disengagement would mean separation from Gaza's hostile Arab population.

In other Israeli Arab terror-involvement news, the Supreme Court has handed down stiffer sentences than usual to two Israeli Arabs convicted of smuggling weapons into the country. The court accepted the prosecution’s petition to overturn a lower court’s decision to impose six-year jail terms on the smugglers and raised the jail term to ten years.

Despite the growing terror infrastructure in Judea and Samaria and the discovery of Kassam rocket workshops in northern Samaria, Prime Minister Ariel Sharon told the Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee that he does not know of “significant efforts to manufacture missiles in the West Bank [Judea and Samaria].” Sharon said that terrorists had attempted to smuggle three “weapons experts from Gaza to [Judea and Samaria], but they were caught near Mitzpe Ramon,” in the Negev.

Sharon also defended the Egyptian handling of the border between Gaza and Egypt, which was left open for over a week following the Gaza withdrawal. Sharon said, in defense of the Egyptian forces, that the Egyptians had just recently fired on a group of smugglers in the area of the Philadelphi Route.

The Palestinian Authority security forces, many of whom either moonlight as members of various terror organizations or were hired directly from their ranks as part of negotiations between the groups and the ruling Fatah militia, will be receiving new ammunition over the next few days, including rifle bullets – paid for by the United States and delivered from Egypt with the approval of PM Sharon's cabinet.

Last week, the cabinet also approved the deployment of European Union (EU) personnel to oversee the border between Gaza and Egypt at Rafiach.

And just in case the lack of PA confrontation with terror groups operating in Gaza has been due to lack of snipers, the European Union has announced the launching of a three-year program to train the Palestinian Authority's quasi-army, saying that the PA needs a "credible police force."

3. Anniversary of Rambam's Temple Mount Ascent Tuesday
By Ezra HaLevi

Holy Temple enthusiasts observe Tuesday, the 6th of Heshvan as a minor holiday – a tradition observed by the Rambam (Maimonides) - to commemorate his ascent of the Temple Mount.

The Rambam (Moshe, son of Maimon, otherwise known as Maimonides) was the physician to the Sultan of Egypt in the 12th century. His most well known work is the 14 volume Mishna Torah, (literally, The Repetition of the Torah), which was the first attempt to systematically codify the entire body of Jewish law, (halachah). This work became the basis for later codifications, most notably, the Shulkhan Arukh, written by Rav Yoseph Karo in the 16th century.

In 1166 C.E. the Rambam made a pilgrimage to Israel from his home in Egypt, writing of his trip:

"We left Acco for Jerusalem under perilous conditions. I entered into 'the great and holy house' [the term used to refer to the Holy Temple] and prayed there on the sixth day of the month of Cheshvan. And on the first day of the week, the ninth day of the month of Cheshvan, I left Jerusalem for Hebron to kiss the graves of my forefathers in the Cave of Machpela. And on that very day, I stood in the Cave and I prayed, praised be G-d for everything. And these two days, the sixth [when he prayed on the Temple Mount in Jerusalem] and the ninth of Mar-Heshvan I vowed to make as a special holiday and in which I will rejoice with prayer, food and drink. May the Lord help me to keep my vows...."

Tuesday morning, Temple Mount activists and educators stood with a sign marking the occasion at the entrance to the Temple Mount at the southern end of the Western Wall plaza.

The banner highlighted the fact that the Rambam actually prayed on the Temple Mount, which was under Muslim rule at the time – whereas Jews are banned from uttering a prayer on Judaism's holiest site today, even though it is under Israeli rule.

The prayer ban is enforced by Israel police and the Muslim Wakf, who surround and closely watch any Jewish visitors to the site, removing them and banning them from future visits to the mount if they are caught so much as moving their lips in a way resembling prayer.

"We hope that this vigil will be the opening shot in the struggle against the anti-Semitic policy of the Israeli government with regard to the Temple Mount," one participant explained.

Rabbi Chaim Richman, Director of the Temple Institute, ascended the Temple Mount Tuesday morning and described the emotional nature of the visit to Arutz-7.

"We felt very strongly that we were part of the trajectory of Jewish tradition – that we were continuing the Rambam's tradition," he said. "Despite the fact that we were surrounded by police and Wakf officials who followed us the whole way, we were able to connect to the emotional visit of the Rambam in his time."

Visiting the Temple Mount remains a controversial topic in the religious Jewish world. Years of the site being off-limits to non-Muslims and differing opinions with regard to the location of the Holy Temple cause some to advise against visiting the site at all – even within the areas known to have been added by Herod.

"It is very frustrating that there are people that go to the extent of doubting that the Rambam even visited the Mount," Richman said. "He writes that he entered the 'great and holy house,' a term used in all our prayers to refer to the Temple, and is exceedingly emotional in his writing on the experience, something that is very rare for the rationalist rabbi, whose works are known for their exacting language. Do they expect us to believe that he risked his life to visit a shtiebl [makeshift synagogue] nearby? Some people are so stuck in the thinking of 'we don't go there' – that they can't accept that he went there. But anyone that reads the text can clearly see what his stance was."

Hundreds of Jews visit the Temple Mount each month, including entire Yeshivas together with their rabbis as the laws of ascending the Holy Mount according to Jewish law are increasingly taught and studied. There is also a movement trying to obtain permission for non-Muslims to visit the mount using the entrance near the Lion's Gate, an area that is permissible according to all opinions and would allow a broader segment of the observant population to visit in accordance with their rabbi's opinions.

4. Israelis Developing Alternatives to Arab Oil
By Ezra HaLevi

An Israeli inventor and company are trying to use garbage and leftover olive pulp from olive-oil factories, respectively, to replace oil in providing fuel and electricity to the Jewish State.

From one ton of garbage, half a ton of oil, 300 kg of gas or 150 kg of green coal, from which electricity is produced, can be extracted, according to inventor Dr. Sergei Rosenberg.

Dr. Rosenberg spoke with Arutz-7 about the development of his invention that turns garbage into oil. "I turned to the Ministry of Infrastructure with my invention and they told me to build such a machine outside Israel and they would consider bringing it here," Rosenberg described. "I built the machine in Moldova and demonstrated there that it works – with the oil undergoing tests demonstrating that the process is not toxic."

Asked by Arutz-7's Yigal Schok why Israel is not pursuing the invention to wean the Jewish State off of Arab-controlled oil, Dr. Rosenberg said that the state was afraid of implementing the changeover due to concern of taking away the monopoly of the oil tycoons. "To my surprise much of the interest actually came from Arab parties because they have a lot of refuse they want to get rid of in an efficient manner," Rosenberg said.

Dr. Rosenberg gained the experience necessary to come up with his invention from working in Russia before he immigrated to Israel. "In Russia I helped with the building of an artificial reservoir, a number of power stations and I designed the water system for the nuclear core in Chernobyl, but Israel did not hire me for similar work since I don't have any connections. I have other ideas, such as wind turbines that operate on air and exploiting the power of the ocean's waves to produce power."

Another company, Genova Ltd., is also working on alternatives to Arab oil. The company has signed an agreement, according to Globes, with an olive press in the village of Julis, in the Galilee to establish a small facility to produce electricity from the waste from olive pressing.

The facility is slated to produce an estimated 200 kilowatts of power, enough to provide 70 homes with power. It will also provide for the disposing of olive waste formed during oil production, which has until now posed an environmental hazard.

Genova’s method heats the waste to temperatures abover 1500 degrees Fahrenheit, transforming it into a flammable gas. Burning that gas is environmentally-friendly, releases no greenhouse gases and causes no damage to the earth’s ozone layer. The gas operates an electricity-generating turbine.

The company hopes to market the product, which will be small enough to fit on a countertop, to other olive-oil producing countries such as Spain and Italy.

Israeli Concessions Stand
Almost every holy Jewish site has been given away - and now, according to documents, for a nice bribe and the "trade" of a stolen synagogue tuned into a Catholic Church in Toledo, Spain, the Israeli government wants to turn King David's final resting place into another concession from our government to those who have already taken too much from us.
