Today's Lesson:

Kuntres Acharon
(Middle of Essay Four)
----------------------

This is not so, however, with regard to the laws, in which a radiance of Wisdom illuminates them manifestly; [they do not conceal it.]

The garment of Asiyah serves merely as a passage.

[Though the laws vested in the physical things of this world (the physical World of Asiyah) are thus subject to the concealment that pervades Asiyah, they are not garbed in it to the point that the garment essentially affects the wearer, for they merely pass through the garment of Asiyah.]

Just as on the festivals, when Chesed of Atzilut, which is completely clothed in Chesed of Beriah, vivifies this physical world by passing through the Chesed of Yetzirah and of Asiyah, this [passage] is also called investment, (56) for otherwise it would not affect the physicality of This World.

[Thus, just as with regard to the festivals, though the animating light first passes through Yetzirah and Asiyah it is still considered to be an illumination of Chesed of Beriah, so too with regard to the laws: The light within the laws merely "passes through" the physicality with which they deal; it always retains a radiation of Supreme Wisdom.]

Now though the physicality of This World as discussed in the law unquestionably conceals completely even the Chesed of Asiyah - [and surely, then, it conceals the diffusion of Supreme Wisdom], still the law proper is not actually physical; it is the Divine Will, drawn from the Supreme Wisdom, for leniency or severity.

[G-d's wisdom affirms that it be His will that a particular legal ruling be either lenient or strict.]

It is only that this [Will] descends and illuminates in revealed fashion in the realm of the physical, just as water descends from a high place, and so on.

[It is the very same water that is now to be found in a low place.]

The physical object itself which the law discusses does, in fact, utterly obscure, as, for example, in the law of (54) "one who exchanges a cow for a donkey," or the laws concerning flesh that is pigul, or is not pigul and is kosher.

[The actual cow or donkey or flesh do in fact completely conceal the radiance from the Supreme Wisdom.

In contrast, it was stated above that when holding a physical etrog one is grasping the G-dly essence of Atzilut.

The difference lies in the fact that the etrog is part of the mitzvah.

As such, it has no identity other than G-dliness and thus does not conceal it.

Since, by contrast, the physical cow or donkey are not part of the law, they can conceal G-dliness.

With regard to the human intellect, however, which studies this law, since the "intellectual" cow and donkey are part of the law, they in fact do not act as a concealment.]

Only the legal ruling itself with its revealed rationale are from Malchut of Beriah [i.e., the reasoning of the Gemara] and of Yetzirah [i.e., the rulings of the Mishnah], of the state of Neshamah, which is G-dliness that vivifies and brings into being the Nefesh-Ruach of Beriah, Yetzirah and Asiyah [which are in the category of created beings], and which are the awe and love of angels and souls and their ChaBaD, [i.e., the contemplation of G-d's greatness that leads to love and fear; - all this is created and vivified] ex nihilo, [as are all created beings.]

[As to this radiation of Supreme Wisdom that descends through Malchut of Beriah and Yetzirah, in the form of Torah as it is found in those worlds prior to its descent below], it therefore slakes [the] thirst [of the souls and angels in the Worlds of Beriah and Yetzirah], before its descent into This World like descending waters....(57)

Even after it descends into Asiyah, it transcends by far ChaBaD of Asiyah, even of the state of Neshamah, which is G-dliness.

[For this is G-dliness of Asiyah, while the illumination of Supreme Wisdom within the laws is the G-dliness of Atzilut.

DAILY MITZVAH (Maimonides): Sunday, December 11, 2005

B"H

Kislev 10, 5766 * December 11, 2005

==================================================
D A I L Y M I T Z V A H (M A I M O N I D E S )
==================================================

Today's Mitzvot (Day 100 of 339):

Negative Mitzvot 193, 153, 194; Positive Mitzvah 146
---------------------------------------------------------------------

Negative Mitzvah 193: It is forbidden to eat fruit grown in
a vineyard which has been planted with
different types of seeds

-Deuteronomy 22:9 "You shall not plant your vineyard with different
species of seeds; otherwise the fruit of the
seed which you have planted and the fruit of the
vineyard will be forfeited"

This Negative Mitzvah prohibits the planting of grain seeds and
grape seeds together in the same vineyard.

We are forbidden to eat any grapes or crops that grow in such
a vineyard and the produce must be burned.

------------------------------------------------------------------

Negative Mitzvah 153: We are forbidden to eat "Tevel"

-Leviticus 22:15. "And they shall not profane the holy things of
the children of Israel, which they offer to the
L-rd"

It is necessary to peel an orange before eating it, or cut it open
so the fruit can be separated from the peel.

Did you ever try getting at the fruit without removing or cutting
through the peel?!

In the same way, the Torah teaches us that we must we must "peel
away" - set aside the Terumah and Ma'aser to be given to the
Priests and Levites.

Only after we "peel away" the portion that we may not eat, can
we enjoy the rest of the fruit, which is our portion.

Produce which has not had the Terumah and Ma'aser separated from
it, is called "Tevel".

We are forbidden to eat such food until the Terumah and Ma'aser
are separated.

Today, even though the Beit Hamikdash has not yet been rebuilt,
this Negative Mitzvah still applies in Eretz Yisrael.

We must still separate the amount that we would have been required
to give to the Priests and Levites, and only then are we are
allowed to eat the food.

In Eretz Yisrael, many food products are stamped with the seal of
the Rabbinate or Beit Din, which assures us that the food is not
Tevel.

The food industry hires Rabbis to fulfill this Negative Mitzvah
by separating the portions required from the large amount of food
brought straight from the farms before it is sold or packaged.

This makes it easy to shop in the supermarkets and grocery stores,
because we no longer need to separate the portions of Terumah and
Ma'aser from each package, since it has already been done for us.

However, in order to be sure, remember to look on the package for
a stamp or seal from the Rabbinate or Beit Din.

------------------------------------------------------------------

Negative Mitzvah 194: It is forbidden to drink "Yayin Nesech"

-Deuteronomy 32:38 "Who eat the fat of their sacrifices, and drink
the wine of their libations"

This Negative Mitzvah prohibits us from drinking the wine of non-
Jews that has been used for idol worship.

Our Rabbis added to this commandment and forbade the drinking of
any wine which has been made or touched by non-Jews. Such wine is
called "S'tam Yaynum".

Through this Negative Mitzvah, as with some others, we can see that
"kosher" does not only mean the ingredients that go into a product.
Food can become non-kosher in the way it is prepared or handled.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Positive Mitzvah 146: "Shechitah" - Slaughtering Animals for Food

-Deuteronomy 12:21 "And you shall slaughter of your cattle and of your
sheep...as I have commanded you"

If you received a new computerized game as a gift for your birthday,
you would be anxious to use it. Before beginning, you would have to
read the instructions and follow them precisely, otherwise the game
might not work properly.

In the Torah, HaShem gave us certain laws which, when followed
correctly, enable man to eat animals and get proper nourishment.

The Torah allows us to eat these animals only after specific
preparation, involving proper slaughtering and koshering.

This special type of slaughtering is called Shechitah.

We may not eat any meat unless it has undergone a proper Shechitah,
by a qualified individual who is called a "Shochet."

• Liberation of R. DovBer of Lubavitch (1826)

In 1826, Rabbi DovBer of Lubavitch (see calendar entry for yesterday, Kislev 9 [http://www.chabad.org/215648]) was arrested on charges that his teachings threatened the imperial authority of the Czar, but was subsequently exonerated. The date of his release, Kislev 10, is celebrated amongst Chabad Chassidim as a "festival of liberation." Tachnun (confession of sins) is omitted from the day's prayers, farbrengens [http://www.chabad.org/2216] are held, and Rabbi DovBer's teachings are studied.
