CHASSIDIC STORY: The Princess

B"H

The Princess
By: Nissan Mindel
-----------------

Once upon a time there lived a great king, who had an only daughter. The princess was noble and fair, and when she grew up, the king looked for a worthy young man to be his daughter's husband. Many dukes and princes wooed the royal princess, but she turned them down one after another. "This one is a glutton," she said, "and that one is too fond of wine." The king became impatient, and swore that the next young man that would come to the gates of the palace would be the princess' husband.

It so happened that the next man to come to the palace gates was a simple peasant. But true to his word, the King married off his daughter to the peasant. The bridegroom took his bride to his village, where he set up his home. To the peasant, the princess was just a wife, and he treated her as he had always thought he would treat his wife. She worked hard, until her pretty face and hands became rough from toil. The villagers often made fun of her and insulted her.

The poor princess was very unhappy. She began writing to her father every day, bitterly complaining to him about her lot. The king felt sorry for his beloved daughter, and sent word to her that on a certain day he would come to visit her. The news soon spread through the village that the king was coming to visit his daughter, and there was a great to-do. Everybody came to the house of the king's son-in-law to help scrub and clean up the place, and decorate it. The king's daughter was now treated with great respect. No more dirty work for her! She was given a beauty treatment and dressed up in fine clothes. Everybody was very friendly and respectful to her.

The time came when the king's runner came dashing into the village, bringing news that the king was approaching the village. Everybody turned out to greet the king. "Long live the King!" "Long live the Princess!" they shouted, as they accompanied the king and his daughter into the decorated and illuminated village. The king entered the home of his son-in-law and found it clean and spotless, and decorated with bunting and flowers.

He saw the great honor and respect that his daughter enjoyed and he was pleased. He wondered why his daughter had been sending him such alarming letters. Father and daughter spent a happy day together, and the king then prepared to take his leave. The princess embraced her father and cried bitterly, "O' father, dear father, don't leave me here! Take me with you! Please, take me back home!"

"But my dear daughter," the king replied, "you seem to be happy here; the way they seem to treat you here, I am sure no princess has enjoyed more honor and affection."

"O' dear father," the princess cried, "all this honor and affection they showed me today is for your benefit. They heard you were coming, so they made a big fuss about me. But the moment you leave, they will begin to treat me as before, insult me, and make me very unhappy."

The king called his son-in-law to his side, and asked him, "Is this the way to treat my daughter? Don't you know that she is a princess?"

The husband's eyes were filled with tears as he replied, "Your Majesty, I know she is a princess, but what can I do? I am a poor man, I must work very hard for a living. I am unable to give her the kind of life she really deserves. Besides, I live in a village, among people full of wickedness and envy. They do not appreciate your daughter's qualities, and take every opportunity to insult her.

"But you are a great king. Since you found it wise to take me for a son-in-law, take me away from here! Lift me up to your position! Give me an estate worthy of your daughter and of the king's son-in-law, and I will then be able to give your daughter the kind of life she really deserves...!"

* * * * *

The King of Kings, the Holy One, Blessed be He, wanted to give his daughter --the Torah-- to Adam, the first man, whom G-d created with His own hands. But the Torah said, "He is a glutton; he ate of the Tree of Knowledge against your express command." Then G-d wished to give the Torah to Noah, and the Torah said, "He is too fond of wine; did he not plant a vineyard and did he not get drunk?" Finally G-d gave the Torah to the children of Israel, whom He had just brought out of Egyptian bondage.

All year round the Torah is often neglected and even shamed. Day after day the Torah sends a message to the king, complaining about her treatment, as it is written: "Every day a heavenly voice calls out, 'Woe to the creatures for shaming the Torah!'"

Then come the king's messengers to announce the arrival of the king--they are the days of Elul heralding the coming of Rosh Hashanah. We then wake up, and begin feverish preparations; we pray and learn and recite Psalms as never before. Rosh Hashanah does not find us unprepared. We sound the shofar and hail the King of Kings. G-d is among us, and we enjoy His Divine light, and our hearts are filled with the nearness of G-d, with reverence and love for His Divine Majesty.

Yom Kippur comes, and G-d finds all Jews repenting, pure and holy, like angels. But after neilah is over and the shofar is sounded to announce the departure of the shechinah, the Torah begins to cry, "Father, father, don't leave me! Take me with you, for soon they will take away all the glory from me, and forget who I am, and mistreat me again!"

Then G-d says to His people, "Is this the way to treat my daughter? Don't you know that the Torah is a Divine princess!" And the Jewish people answers, "Master of the Universe! Indeed, we know the greatness of the Torah. But what can we do? We live in poverty, and have no proper home. We live among the nations of the world, who do not want to know about the Torah. So please take us away from here; take us back to our holy land, for all the world is yours; give us back our holy land as an inheritance, and we shall be able to keep the Torah in glory!"

That is why we pray, immediately after the shofar is sounded on the night of Yom Kippur, "Next year in Jerusalem, through our Righteous Messiah, and there we shall serve You as in the days of old!"

LESSONS IN TANYA: Thursday, November 3, 2005

B"H

Cheshvan 1, 5766 * November 3, 2005

===============================
L E S S O N S I N T A N Y A
===============================

Today's Lesson:

Iggeret HaKodesh
(Middle of Epistle Twenty-Five)
-------------------

Now, (39) "[G-d created] this opposite that" there are (40) "ten crowns of impurity."

[Since the entire dynamic of the holy "side" of the universe has its counterpart in the "other side," the sitra achra, the above- mentioned Ten Sefirot of holiness (and likewise the ten corresponding faculties of the G-dly soul) each have their unholy counterpart].

From these issue the souls of the nations, which are also comprised of the very same ten levels.

The exposition of Sefer HaGilgulim (41) on the verse, (42) "That man rules over man, to his detriment," is common knowledge: it refers to the mystery of the exile of the Shechinah in the midst of the kelipot, in order to animate them and to empower them to rule in the present time of exile.

"[Man rules over man" thus means that the "evil man" (of kelipah) rules over the "sacred man" i.e., the holy "side" of the universe].

However, this [temporary dominion of evil] is "to his [ultimate] detriment...," [for its underlying intent is that the sparks of holiness that are found within evil, be extracted and elevated].

This is why the nations presently dominate the Jewish people (43) for the souls of the nations [derive] from the kelipot, in which the Shechinah is vested in a state of exile, [empowering them to rule].

Though extensive exposition is required, as to how and what [is the manner in which the Shechinah is invested in the exile of the kelipot], nevertheless, it is truly so.

Despite this, the kelipot and the nations receive their nurture and life-force only from a reflection extended to them from the hindmost dimension of holiness, "in the manner of one who [unwillingly] throws [some-thing] over his shoulder [to his enemy," as explained in Tanya, ch. 22].

And even that is by way of numerous and intense contractions and screens, until this radiation becomes vested in the materiality of this world, dispensing wealth and honor and all physical pleasures unto the nations.

Jews, however, elicit [their sustenance] from the Supernal Countenance [the panim, or pnimiyus, i.e., the innermost aspect of Divinity]; as it is written, (44) "May G-d make His Countenance shine upon you," each according to the source of his soul, up to the most elevated of levels.

39. Kohelet 7:14.
40. Zohar III, 41b; et al.
41. Ch. 2.
42. Kohelet 8:9.
43. The text here (in Hebrew and English) reinstates the
original version, which a czarist censor had tampered with
so that it read, "the heathens used to dominate the Jewish
people...." A few lines earlier, the word ata ("in the
present") had likewise been deleted.
44. Bamidbar 6:25.

DAILY MITZVAH (Maimonides): Thursday, November 3, 2005

B"H

Cheshvan 1, 5766 * November 3, 2005

==================================================
D A I L Y M I T Z V A H (M A I M O N I D E S )
==================================================

Today's Mitzvot (Day 62 of 339):

Positive Mitzvah 153
---------------------------------------------------------------------

Positive Mitzvah 153: The New Moon - Calculating the Months and Years

-Exodus 12:2 "This month shall be to you the beginning of months"

Have you noticed how the moon changes its shape throughout the
month?

At times, it shines brightly like a cream-colored ball.

Other times, we can compare it to a slice of honeydew. On some
nights, it looks like a split banana! Sometimes, you can't see
it at all!

While in bed watching the moon, take a peek through your window,
shut your eyes for a moment and imagine a scene taking place many
years ago in Eretz Yisrael.

In the Great Beit-Din, the chief Rabbi sits in his honored place,
greeting the Jew who just arrived in the court.

"I saw the moon last night, Rabbi, and I believe it is the beginning
of a new month," reports the Jew.

The Rabbi motions to a chart with many different moon shapes hanging
on the wall. "Is this the shape you saw?" asks the Rabbi, pointing
to a particular shape.

The man who witnessed the moon would be questioned until the judges
were satisfied. When the judges heard proper testimony from at
least two witnesses, they would declare that a new month had arrived.

Determining the new month is very important to the Jewish calendar.

HaShem commands us to celebrate specific holidays in their set seasons
and on particular dates. In order to fulfill these commandments, we
must know when a new month begins and count the days accordingly.

This way, we will be assured of celebrating the holiday on the
correct date.

The Great Beit-Din (Sanhedrin) in Eretz Yisrael is commanded to
determine and calculate the counting of the months.

The Rabbis knew when the moon would first begin to shine again. They
informed the people to be alert and immediately report their findings.

Proper eye-witness testimony would serve as proof of the new month's
arrival. Afterwards, news of the new moon would be spread promptly
enabling all Jews to count the days of the month in a unified manner.

In this way, the Jewish calendar was set and followed.

In addition, HaShem commanded that the holidays of Pesach and Sukkot
be celebrated in the spring and fall.

The Jewish calendar is a "Lunar Calendar" which means that it follows
the phases of the moon. However, the seasons change according to the
sun's yearly cycle.

There is an eleven and a quarter day difference between the cycle
of the sun and the twelve lunar months.

Because of this, we might reach the proper Hebrew date for Passover,
but the spring season will not yet have arrived!

There is a way to overcome this problem.

If such a situation arises, the Rabbis would foresee it and the Beit-
Din would declare a leap-year.

The last month of the Hebrew calendar - Adar, would be doubled,
(First-Adar and Second-Adar) and Pesach would then arrive in the
spring time!

The Torah commands the Beit-Din to calculate the months and declare
the necessary leap years. The manner in which it was done, as
described above, applies only to the time of the Great Beit-Din in
Eretz Yisrael.

Today, we follow the Jewish calendar which was established by Rabbi
Hillel HaNasi, a descendant of Rabbi Yehuda HaNasi.

He calculated the precise arrivals of the new moon and the years
which would be considered leap years.

We rely on this calendar until the arrival of Mashiach, when we
will return to the original method of the eye-witness report.

* * *

PLEASE NOTE: The Daily Mitzvah schedule runs parallel to the daily
study of 3 chapters of Maimonides' 14-volume code. There are
instances when the Mitzvah is repeated a few days consecutively
while the exploration of the same Mitzvah continues in the in-depth
track.

At Mincha, and on Monday and Thursday of the approaching week (Lech L'cha), the third Aliya ("Yisrael") begins with Vayeira Hashem El Avram etc.

The Rebbe my father told someone at Yechidus:

"Ever since G-d told our father Avraham, `Go from your land
etc.' (1) and it is then written `Avram kept travelling
southward,' (2) we have the beginning of the mystery of Birurim.

By decree of Divine Providence man goes about his travels to
the place where the "sparks" that he must purify await their
redemption.

Tzadikim, who have vision, see where their Birurim await them
and go there deliberately.

As for ordinary folk, The Cause of all causes and the Prime

bring these people to that place where lies their obligation
to perform the Avoda of Birurim."

Today is: Thursday, Cheshvan 1, 5766
Rosh Chodesh Cheshvan

======================
Today's Laws & Customs
======================

• Rosh Chodesh Observances

Today is the second of the two Rosh Chodesh ("Head of the Month") days for the month of Cheshvan (when a month has 30 days, both the last day of the month and the first day of the following month serve as the following month's Rosh Chodesh).

Special portions are added to the daily prayers: Hallel (Psalms 113-118) is recited -- in its "partial" form -- following the Shacharit morning prayer, and the Yaaleh V'yavo prayer is added to the Amidah and to Grace After Meals; the additional Musaf prayer is said (when Rosh Chodesh is Shabbat, special additions are made to the Shabbat Musaf). Tachnun (confession of sins) and similar prayers are omitted.

Many have the custom to mark Rosh Chodesh with a festive meal and reduced work activity. The latter custom is prevalent amongst women, who have a special affinity with Rosh Chodesh -- the month being the feminine aspect of the Jewish Calendar [http://www.chabad.org/1208].

• Month of Cheshvan Begins

The month of Cheshvan is also called "Mar-Cheshvan." Mar means "bitter" -- an allusion to the fact that the month contains no festive days. Mar also means "water", alluding to the month's special connection with rains (the 7th of Cheshvan is the day on which Jews we begin praying for rain (in the Holy Land), and the Great Flood, which we read about in this week's Torah reading [http://www.chabad.org/9168], began on Cheshvan 17th).

More Than Stories
-----------------

People think the Torah is all about laws and customs and quaint stories, with a mystical side as well.

In truth, the Torah is entirely spiritual. But when you cannot perceive the spiritual, all you see are laws and quaint stories.

Melbourne: Traveling Sukkah

The Beis Chabad for Israeli tourists in Melbourne, directed by R. Dudu Lieder, was active round-the-clock during Sukkos, giving Israeli tourists the opportunity to fulfill the mitzvos of Sukkos. R. Lieder and the temimim who are assisting him spend every moment of chol hamoed driving their mobile sukkah from house to house, benching lulav and esrog with Israelis and inviting them inside for a bite of mezonos and Leishev Basukkah.  At night, the mobile sukkah became the site of a warm chassidishe farbrengen, with the shluchim explaining the significance of Sukkos as well as the time in which we find ourselvs.

On Motzei Shabbos at the Tzeischem L'Shalom to Tishrei guests, hundreds of dollars were distributed to guests who had taken part in the program organized by ATOH-770.  Each student who attended shiurim and was tested on his learning received $100 from shliach R. Naftali Estulin.  R. Estulin took this upon himself to continue the minhag of the Rebbe, who used to personally contribute to the expenses of the guests who arrived for Tishrei.
