YOM KIPPUR: The Power of One (please read)

Dear Friend,

As we count down the hours to the holiest day of the year, when we each ask G-d to inscribe us in the Book of Life, it may be appropriate to reflect on a lesson of the year past.

The year was, by all accounts, a tumultuous one, both in Israel and throughout the world. Yet, certain individuals stood out for facing the challenges and making a difference in people’s lives.

Each of these heroes took to heart the lesson of Yom Kippur: The Power of One.

In the times of the Temple: One High Priest serving one G-d in His one Temple on His one day on behalf of His one people.

And today: One person, effecting one turn of the page, making one good resolution, doing one good deed -- can change the entire world.

Each one of us has the power to tip the scales for all of humankind.

At Chabad.org we try to keep this lesson very close to heart. Our staff is driven by the deep teachings and life-example of the Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem M. Schneerson, of righteous memory, about the core of innate goodness -- the soul -- that exists within every human being.

Our rabbis/responders labor to answer each person’s questions -- from the most basic to the most esoteric -- patiently and meticulously. And whether dealing with a tsunami or a hurricane, people uprooted in Gush Katif or from New Orleans, Chabad.org staff work to make a difference, to put people in touch with one another, to provide solace and practical advice, to help better the life of even one individual.

Year-round we are visited by more than a million people. Yet we try to treat one as a complete world unto him/herself. Each has been entrusted with the full Power of One.

This Yom Kippur, you hold the keys to the world's future.

Your one good deed, your primal cry from the depths of your soul, can penetrate the Gates of Heaven and elicit a reciprocal response from G-d.

Our Sages teach us that a crucial part of our service to G-d is to give generously of our earnings to charity.

We work hard to earn our income. We pour all of our energy -- our soul -- into it. When we then give it away to charity--when we recognize that we are but G-d's appointed caretakers of the resources He entrusted to us and act on His behalf to distribute it--we demonstrate one of the highest levels of faith a human being can achieve: We give a piece of our very soul.

In preparation for Yom Kippur, when we pray that the power of our one soul be propelled by the power of the one day to reach the very essence of our one G-d, let us demonstrate our faith, let us bare our very soul by giving freely and generously to charity.
